Notice
Long power chords start this song off with a grand opening, almost classical in approach, and lead us to believe we are in for a very "serious" listen. Wrong. When Riff B comes in you know this is a rockin' song by anyone's standard. In order to play it well you must pay special attention to the "feel" or "groove." Practice playing Riffs B, C, and D with a metronome set on 144. Play them steadily and with conviction, making sure you do not rush. Here is where the "feel" comes in. It is a matter of feeling you are playing a phrase of music, not merely disconnected notes, and also that the rhythm is so in time or in the "groove" that the music practically plays itself. Play these riffs forever with the metronome and you will achieve ultimate grooviosity.
At Riff E you can pluck the open A string with your fret hand so that the pick hand has only to manage the whammy bar.
When going from the chorus to verse three, notice that Guitar I is now notated above the vocal staff and Guitar II is notated in the guitar staff playing fills.
The guitar solo begins with a series of pinched notes. Using your picking hand, strike the string with the tip of the pick and the side of your thumb simultaneously. This produces a slightly muted and pinched harmonic effect. On the 3rd bar of the solo, two leads overlap for two measures. At the 5th bar the new lead which began at bar three continues the solo to its end. The riff that starts on the last 16th note, two bars from the end of the solo, to the 3rd beat of the last measure, is struck only on the first note. The rest of the notes are hammered.
Three bars before the final chorus, the harmonic on the D string is played with the tremolo bar making short dips just before each downbeat so that the feedback notes come up on every beat throughout those three bars.
In the 6th, 5th and 4th bars from the end of the song, notice how the power chords slide without being struck. To achieve this you must hold your hand down tightly, sustaining the chords until the moment they are to be slid into the next chord, then struck where indicated. The feedback in the last two bars of the song is produced by switching your toggle switch back and forth.
